Any Applications Received Now Will Be Accepted For The 2025-2026 Academic Year.

This $1,500 annual scholarship is open to any graduating high school senior or person already in college or a post high school institution who is considering a career in either K-12 education or as a first responder (i.e. Police, Fire, EMT). This scholarship is made in memory of the teachers, school administrators/staff and the children who were killed or wounded during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, CT on December 14, 2012 and to those first responders who risked their lives to attend to the wounded. It is awarded by the Donna and Steven Mendyka Family to recognize those people who, through their public service, educate, serve and protect our children.

The scholarship money is intended to defray the cost of any college related expenses. It should be used by the student in the area they need the most help in order to attend a college, university or post-high school institute of their choice.

In addition to recognizing the career choice of the students the Mendyka Family is also looking for students who are active outside the classroom and have shown leadership traits both inside and outside the classroom. Every school year the Mendyka Family awards:

  • One $1,500 scholarship to one student they select or

  • One $1,000 scholarship and one $500 scholarship to two students they select or

  • Three $500 scholarships to three students they select

To be considered for this scholarship, please complete the application below no later than May 1, 2025.
